OOO TRAVEL SCHOOL / BEFORE YOU GO
Prepare your phone for a day without signal.
A saved link is not always an offline copy. Prepare a small travel folder that still helps when mobile data, an app login or your battery lets you down.
Save information you can actually open
Download your transport and hotel confirmations rather than leaving them only in email. Keep the booking reference, dates, passenger names, address and support contact easy to locate. Where an operator requires a live or refreshed ticket, follow that requirement; a screenshot is not automatically a valid replacement.
Use clear filenames such as ‘01 outbound flight’ and ‘02 first hotel’. Keep required original documents available separately. Digital copies are useful backups, not a promise that an airline, hotel or border authority will accept them instead of originals.
Download the area, not just a pin
In Google Maps, use the Offline maps feature to download a suitable area where supported. Include the arrival point, accommodation and the places between them. The whole driving route needs to fall inside the downloaded area for offline guidance.
Google says offline walking, cycling and public-transport directions are unavailable; live traffic and alternative driving routes also need connectivity. Save essential public-transport instructions separately and check that downloaded maps remain up to date. Availability varies by country or region.
Keep a short arrival note
Make one plain-text note containing the first hotel’s address, contact number, check-in arrangement, transfer meeting point and the name of your booking provider. Add the address in the local language if the property supplies it. This is quicker to show a driver than navigating several apps.
Keep sensitive document copies in a protected location and avoid putting them into publicly shared folders. Share only the trip information that a companion actually needs. A paper copy of the first address and key contact can help if your phone is unavailable.
- Arrival address and entrance information
- Booking reference and support contact
- Primary transfer and backup instructions
- A trusted contact who knows your broad plan
Test before you leave home
Switch to airplane mode and try opening the files, map area and arrival note. Check that your key apps do not unexpectedly require a fresh login. Test again after moving files or changing devices.
Charge your phone and check the cables and adapter you will take. If you carry a power bank, confirm your airline’s current carriage rules. Also check how you will access bookings if the phone is lost: a companion’s permitted copy or an accessible account recovery method can prevent one device becoming your only plan.
